Giving to Illinois Bands

The success of our Illinois Bands program depends greatly on the continued support from loyal alumni and friends. We are currently working on a multi-year endeavor to purchase and maintain instruments for our students in both our concert and athletic bands. We want to make sure our students have the equipment one would expect when thinking about the Illinois Bands program––nationally known and one of the most respected in the world.

Special Gift for our Donors
Any donor who gives $1,000 or more  will receive an "Illinois Sash" or "MI Cape" from the previous set of band uniforms (now retired). All items have been pre-selected and are in good condition. This gift has been approved by the state of Illinois and these coveted keepsakes are suitable for framing.

Specific Funds

Friends and family of Illinois Bands have created numerous awards and scholarships to support our students and contribute to their success. We thank each of them for their generosity and invite you to consider contributing to one of these established funds.

$ Marching Illini Instructional Tower

Our Marching Illini Instructional Tower fund was established to build a new rehearsal instructional tower on our new practice field. At this time we use a temporary scissor-lift in rehearsals for Prof. Barry Houser to teach music and drill. Once the instructional tower is built, any remaining funds will automatically go into the Marching Illini Band Fund. Note: there are special naming rights for this tower project. If interested, please contact David Allen.

$ Illinois Concert Bands Fund

Our Concert Bands fund was established to support the many students who participate in our concert bands. This includes the purchase of concert instruments for non-music majors, music purchase and rental, and any other equipment and materials needed to support a successful and nationally recognized program.

The legacy of former Director of Bands Harry Begian is acknowledged through an endowment establishing an award for travel and study given to a MM or DMA wind band conducting major.

Creating a Legacy of Excellence
A significant portion of the University of Illinois Bands' annual and endowment income comes from realized bequests and other types of deferred gifts from our alumni and friends. Donors who remember the Illinois Bands in their estate plans provide critical funding to establish scholarships, awards, fellowships and other student and faculty support. There are many ways to establish a planned gift for the Illinois Bands.

We would like to recognize the following named endowment funds in support of Illinois Bands:

  • Guy M. Duker Awards Fund
  • Thomas J. Harris Memorial Band Award Fund
  • William F. Ludwig U of I Band Awards for Percussionists Fund
  • John Brownfield Memorial Fund
  • George Brownfield Memorial Fund
  • James R. and Candace Penn Frame Endowment Fund

If you would like more information about ways to give, or have other questions, please call or email David Allen, Associate Director of Development (Office: 217-333-6453).
