Ensembles

Wind Symphony

Comprised of approximately 60 undergraduate and graduate students who have attained the highest level of proficiency on their instruments, the Wind Symphony is the premiere ensemble of the University of Illinois band program. Performing the finest available repertoire, the ensemble's performances include traditional wind band literature, one-per-part chamber works and premiere performances of new compositions in the ever expanding wind band genre.  The ensemble works on the flexible "pool" concept so that each work in the curriculum is staffed with the instrumentation envisioned by the composer.  The Wind Symphony performs a minimum of three concerts per semester, and has the responsibility to lead the band profession in performance standards as well as creatively developing the future in training wind players in a variety of conducted ensemble settings. The performance range of this ensemble includes campus, state, regional, national and international events and venues. The Wind Symphony is open to music majors and non-majors by audition.

Wind Orchestra

Comprised of approximately 60 undergraduate and graduate students who have attained an exceptional level of proficiency on their instruments, the Wind Orchestra is the second artistic concert band of the University of Illinois band program. Like the Wind Symphony, the Wind Orchestra performs large and chamber wind repertoire, new / contemporary music, and has a specific curricular design focused on variety of styles throughout the year.  The ensemble works on the flexible "pool" concept so that each work in the curriculum is staffed with the instrumentation that the composer envisioned.  The Wind Orchestra rehearses four hours per week, generally presents three concerts per semester, and has a mission of collaboration with other ensembles.  The performance range of this ensemble includes campus, local area, and statewide events.  The Wind Orchestra is open to music majors and non-majors by audition.

Hindsley Symphonic Band

The Hindsley Symphonic Band consists of approximately 70 musicians.  In traditional symphonic band format, this ensemble is a set instrumentation and performs large ensemble works, quality repertoire on various levels, historic transcriptions, and focuses on both experience and proficiency development for student members. Concerts for the Hindsley Symphonic Band are on campus at a variety of venues and sometimes in tandem with other public school ensembles from the state of Illinois.  The ensemble is open to both music majors and non-majors by audition.

University Band

The University Band is on equal positioning with the Campus Band. A traditional concert band with set instrumentation, the University Band performs large ensemble works and is specifically focused on providing members with a variety of quality repertoire, unique/untraditional repertoire, and non-traditional collaborations. Concerts for the University Band are held on campus at a variety of venues and sometimes in tandem with the Campus Band. The ensemble is specifically geared to serve non-music majors who want to enjoy playing and improve their skills, and music education students on secondary instruments who wish to become familiar with more repertoire and other instruments than their primary. The University Band is open to both music majors and non-majors by audition, but does not fulfill the large ensemble requirement for music majors. It is a recommended second "large ensemble" experience for music education majors playing secondary instruments, and is a wonderful musical outlet for non-music majors to enjoy actively making-music. University Band rehearses two hours per week and presents one concert per semester. The ensemble is open to all by audition.
