Illini Marching Band Championships

The University of Illinois Bands within the UI School of Music is proud to present the Illini Marching Band Championships.  The Illini Marching Band Championships provides participating bands with feedback from the finest national adjudicators, relevant and educational evaluation rubrics, and the thrill of performing in historic Memorial Stadium at the University of Illinois. Participation is open to the first 46 Illinois bands that apply in six classifications based on certified school size.  The two awards ceremonies, one mid-day for classes 1A through 3A, and one at the end of the day for classes 4A through 6A, feature signature awards and performances by The Nation's Premier College Marching Band - the world-famous Marching Illini!

Apply: The application process for 2012 is closed due to a very full contest!  The 2013 application process will open on March 1, 2013.  Thank you and we hope you apply in 2013.   

Acceptance Policy: First come-first serve until the event is filled. Payment must be received in order for application to be considered complete. There are no exceptions to this policy.

Fee: $450.00

Adjudication Format

Five adjudicators, distributed as follows:

The tie-breaker will be the combination of the three music scores.

Additionally, there will be a guard adjudicator and a percussion adjudicator.  Drum Majors have captions for commentary within two of the primary adjudicator forms (Individual Music and Visual Effect).  

Classifications:
Based on school enrollment projections for Fall 2012

1A: 1-350
2A: 351-800
3A: 801-1100
4A: 1101-1600
5A: 1601-2500
6A: 2500+
 
Order
The performance order of classifications will rotate each year. 1A, 2A, and 3A will rotate with each other, and 4A, 5A and 6A will do the same. This year the performance order will be 2A, 3A, 1A followed by 5A, 6A, 4A. The order of performance within each classification will be selected randomly – including the previous year’s winners.

There will be two awards ceremony. The first ceremony will take place during the day at the conclusion of classes 1A-3A, and the second ceremony will take place in the evening at the conclusion of classes 4A-6A.  Exhibition performances of the world famous Marching Illini will occur at both ceremonies. 

1st, 2nd, and 3rd place trophies will be presented in each classification

Outstanding Music, Visual, Guard and Percussion trophies will be presented in each classification

The band receiving the highest score in combined classes 1A, 2A and 3A will receive the “Illinois Grand Champion” trophy

The band receiving the highest score in combined classes 4A, 5A and 6A will receive the “Illinois Grand Champion” trophy

A random drawing for combined classes 1A, 2A, 3A, and for 4A, 5A, 6A will occur to award a new drum major podium to the two schools drawn courtesy of Smith-Walbridge Clinics & Band Products.
